The wealthy heir Axel Herlofson has built an empire as a bank manager and shipowner and owns half of the businesses in the town. For the people of Arendal, he is the path to prosperity. His addiction to opium, gambling and younger men is less well known.

Risør Wooden Boat Festival has been visited by 10-15,000 people every year since 1984 at the beginning of August. We are the meeting place for some of the world's most beautiful wooden boats. In addition, we promote coastal culture and traditional crafts in boats and construction. We have activities for all generations through a large program, both academic and social.
