Thursday, October 24 at 7:00 PM, you will meet Ole Torp in conversation with journalist and editor Steinar Nielsen about the book "The Depths Under Him".
On Thursday, August 22, 1940, the D/S Keret of Bergen was overtaken in the Atlantic Ocean by the German submarine U-37. On every single voyage, submarine captain Victor Oehrn sent merchant ships to the bottom of the ocean. On board the D/S Keret is 26-year-old Nicolay Torp as mate and telegraphist.
Now his son, the prominent journalist and NRK presenter Ole Torp, tells about his father's dramatic voyage and his experiences as a war sailor during the six years he was away from home.
The book, "The Depths Below Him," is also a book about the aftermath of the war, about the marks the war left not only on the sailors but also on the next generation.
Ole Torp was born in Bergen in 1951. He has traveled the world as a reporter for NRK and Dagbladet. He has been a correspondent in New York, Washington DC and Beijing.
