Risør Wooden Boat Festival invites you to an exciting winter conference on February 7–9, 2025, where boat enthusiasts from all over the country gather in the beautiful coastal town of Risør. This is a rare opportunity to delve into the history, craftsmanship and culture surrounding both wooden boats and the early plastic boats that shaped Norwegian boating.
The Risør Wooden Boat Festival has been a summer event for decades that attracts thousands of visitors, but in February an intimate and professional immersion is arranged as a wintery supplement.
This winter conference provides a unique insight into both Norwegian boat history and the challenges and opportunities facing classic boats today.
With limited spaces (only 55 participants), an atmosphere is created where it is possible to get close to speakers, make contacts and actively participate in discussions.
The event is also a golden opportunity to meet like-minded people and explore Risør, a town with proud maritime traditions.
Friday evening:
The conference starts with a joint dinner, where participants can get to know each other in informal surroundings at Promenaden.
Saturday:
The lectures begin with fascinating topics such as the hunt for N-boats and the history behind Draken's timeless design. We also hear about the legendary boat designer Jan Herman Linge and an exciting review of the early history of plastic boats in Agder.
In the afternoon we will gather for a panel debate that asks the question: How can we preserve our unique wooden boat heritage for future generations?
The debate is followed by a workshop focusing on collaboration between Risør Wooden Boat Festival and Risør Classic Boat Festival.
The evening ends with a delicious dinner at Brygga Restaurant.
Sunday:
The conference concludes with lectures about West Wind and the restoration work at Moen. We also gain insight into the lives of boat designers such as Eivind Amble and Johan Anker – two pioneers who have left a lasting mark on the Norwegian boat industry.
For the first time, the conference is expanding to include classic plastic boats from the 1950s to the 1970s. This is a tribute to the pioneering boats that helped define the rise of recreational boating in Norway.
Do you have an old plastic boat with soul? Bring it, share its story, and become part of the community!
In addition to an engaging academic program, the winter conference offers good food, pleasant conversations and a chance to explore Risør's charming streets, history and maritime culture.
The conference is perfect for both wooden boat enthusiasts, owners of classic boats, and those who want to learn more about this unique part of our national history.
Take part in this very special winter experience and join us in celebrating our maritime cultural heritage. See you in Risør!
